Current/Recent Projects

Who am I?
Good question. I ask myself this pretty much every day.

Simply put, I'm a guy who likes the practical side of life. I prefer work that entails me solving a problem, whether it be practically, technically or aesthetically derived. I don't just want to make something, I want to make something that fulfills a need.

I'm the kind of guy who enjoys the quiet structure of my woodshop, but also thrives on getting down and dirty under the hot sun. I like to over-think a project's requirements and then over-work myself to get that project done right.

The name is Patrick Burns. I'm a native to the Los Angeles basin and I work out of my woodshop at The Brewery artist colony in downtown Los Angeles.

I have been dabbling in carpentry most of my teenage and adult life. At first it was more out of necessity than desire. Part boredom and part actual need to fix or make a needed thing. I first began working with the intention of being a full-time carpenter in 1999. In 2005 I made the decision to quit my job as a Technical Writer and make carpentry my primary focus.

I spent most of my 20's and 30's working in computer related jobs. Now although that kind of work can be lucrative, I never really got any lasting satisfaction out of it. I guess that office politics just ain't my cup of tea. I'm now pushing 40 and I find myself seeking a simpler existence where I do not spend my days strapped to a chair and desk in a little walled off cubicle.

I see myself as being at the beginning of my carpentry career...just a young pup in the grand scheme of things. I'm a full disclosure kind of guy, and in that vain I believe that you should know that everything I know has been learned without formal or informal education. I have never had any kind of mentor, per se. I am entirely self-taught.

I am neither licensed, nor am I bonded. I stay clear of projects that deal with the building's structural integrity.

I do general and finish carpentry. I build decks, patios, furniture, doors, cabinetry and custom pieces...that sort of thing. I'm also handy for repair work and general handyman kinda stuff.

I'm always looking for work. If you need kitchen cabinets, let's talk. If you have a chair that needs fixing, I'm your man. If you just have a hole that needs diggin', give me a call. Work is work, and I love doing it.
